Pinot Grigio delle Venezie DOC (controlled appellation)
The initial part of the 2018 growing season was characterized by temperatures which, on the whole, were below normal seasonal averages. A phenomenon which caused a slight delay in the development of the vegetation but was recovered thanks to the positive weather which followed. Up through the first half of July, sunny days alternated with occasional rain, assisting a regular continuity in vine growth and development. Highly useful temperature swings from daytime warmth to evening and nighttime coolness distinguished the month of August: above average daily temperatures and crisp nights. The picking of the Pinot Grigio began during the last ten days of August, as in 2017 but earlier than in the preceding years.
The grapes, upon arrival in the cellars, were delicately destemmed and given a soft pressing and the must was then chilled to a temperature of 48° Fahrenheit (8° centigrade) to assist a natural static settling of the impurities. It then went into temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks where it fermented at temperatures held to a maximum of 63° Fahrenheit (17° centigrade). The wine was then conserved in stainless steel at a temperature of 50° Fahrenheit (10° centigrade), filtered, and then bottled.
The 2018 Santa Cristina Pinot Grigio shows a straw yellow color. The nose is delicate with aromas of pineapple and green apples along with hints of orange zest. The palate is balanced, soft, and savory.
